Thursday 29th May Mulligan Larsen match against Surrey at Wyke Green
The Middlesex Senior Team played it’s first Mulligan Larsen match of the 2025 season against a strong Surrey at Wyke Green. It proved to be a challenging start, with Surrey fielding a team whose highest handicap was still lower than our lowest. Despite a valiant effort from our players, we lost the match 1:5.
A huge congratulations goes to Tsuruko, who made an outstanding debut, securing our only win of the day against a +0.9 handicapper. An impressive achievement!. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Altynay, who showed great resilience by playing her first match for Middlesex under difficult circumstances— her clubs were stolen over the weekend, and she had to compete with a partly
borrowed set. That couldn’t have been easy. Our “Wyke Green force” – Lorely, Elaine, and Alice – gave it everything, pushing their matches to holes 15, 16, and 17 respectively. While they didn’t come out on top, their determination and fighting spirit were commendable.
Individual results:
Tsuruko Kawabata won v Tana Churchill 2 up
Ines Hellmayr lost v Maggie Lowe 5/3
Lorely Paine lost v Katie Sheperd 3/2
Elaine Cole lost v Maria Diegan 2/1
Alice Arnold lost v Belinda Pope 5/3
Altynay Davletova lost v Karen Francis 8/7
Middlesex Women’s Senior Team vs Essex
Our second match of the season was played against Essex at Chigwell Golf Club on 12th June
Unfortunately, a closely fought match ended with a 2:4 defeat to a strong Essex team. 2 of our lost matches went to the 18th green, but unfortunately did not go our way.
There were outstanding performances from Tsuruko Kawabata and Ines Hellmayr who brought home comprehensive wins against lower handicap players. Tsuruko is new to the team this season and is proving to be a wonderful addition with a 2-0 win/loss record. Lulu and Elaine put up great performances, losing narrowly on the 18th.
Individual results:
Lulu Housman lost v Julie Finegan 1 down Tsuruko Kawabata won v Gill Haysham 6/5
Ines Hellmayr won v Sara Dunn 3/2
Lorely Paine lost v Tiff Wade 6/5
Elaine Cole lost v Joan Smith 1 down
Corrine Moy lost v Paula Wendleken 6/5
Middlesex Senior Women’s Team vs Hampshire
Thursday 26th June Mulligan Larsen match against Hampshire at Hartley Wintney
The Middlesex Senior Team enjoyed a warm welcome and a beautifully hosted day at Hartley Wintney for their third match of the season against a strong Hampshire side. Despite the tricky course and tough competition, there were some standout performances. Lorely delivered a
confident and composed win over Ailsa Fraser, clearly at ease on the course. Tsuruko put up a valiant fight, taking reigning English Senior Amateur champion Kerry Smith all the way to the 17th hole.
While the overall result didn’t go our way, we lost 1:5, the team showed great spirit and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Individual results were:
Tsuruko Kawabata lost against Kerry Smith 3/1
Mandy Miller lost against Alison Baker 3/2
Ines Hellmayr lost against Fiona Horrocks 5/4
Lorely Paine won against Ailsa Fraser 3/2
Corrine Moy lost against Diane Oram 6/5
Elaine Cole lost against Julie Cole 6/5

Thursday 25th September Mulligan Larsen match against Kent at West Kent
West Kent is a beautiful golf course and very long and challenging. The match was the story of our year. A couple of us were actually up through the match and didn’t manage to follow through. We lost 2:4.
Individual results:
- Lulu Housman lost v Kim Morris 2/1
- Ines Hellmayr halved with Jen Rutherford
- Lorely Paine halved with Sue Trasler
- Tsuruko Kawabata won Adele Young 4/3

We have to work on our will to win next year with Emily/Martin, but we are all looking forward to Winter training.
Middlesex Senior women's friendly team
Middx ladies Senior Friendly Team played against Buckinghamshire on 18th June. Chiltern Forest is in a spectacular setting in the Chiltern Hills, overlooking the Vale of Aylesbury. The sky was very blue and the temperature very high, so it was quite a challenge to work our way around all the hills and slopes. We had a good match, with some excellent golf played. Our team players were Marie Bowen, Heather Graydon, Clare Brown, Claire Kent, Caroline Brookes, Cheryl Smyth, Lilly Lian and Carolyn Matthews. The score ended up 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 to Buckinghamshire.
MIDDLESEX WOMEN’S SENIORS vs BERKSHIRE, (away)
Match report 15th July, 2025
Our team for the friendly match against Berkshire, which was held at Royal Ascot Golf Club, was comprised of Angela Spelman, Shreya Divani, Claire Kent, Vivian Gray, Arlene Bailey, Liz Kynoch, Lucy Bidmead and Carolyn Matthews. The skies were quite threatening, but we only had a few minutes of rain. The fairways were noticeably lacking irrigation, but this did lead to the ball running and running! We had an enjoyable afternoon, but sadly we were defeated 2 1/2 to 1 1/2.
MIDDLESEX WOMEN’S SENIOR vs HERTFORDSHIRE (Home)
The seniors held their final friendly match of the year which took place on one of the windier days of the Summer so far at Sudbury Golf Club. The course was in remarkably good condition and was greatly enjoyed by both Middx and Herts. The conclusion of the season brought Middx success with a 3-1 win over Herts. Our team today had one newcomer, Jinny Lee Kim, in addition to Heather Graydon, Angela Spelman, Vivian Gray, Cheryl Smith, Lucy Bidmead and Carolyn Matthews.

Friday 10th May Mulligan Larsen match against Hampshire at Wyke Green
The Middlesex women’s senior team started their season with a match against the newly joined Hampshire team. Held at Wyke Green, most of our players home ground, the match ended in an exciting 3-3 draw. We are delighted with this strong start to the season against such a formidable opponent.
Individual results:

Friday 24th May Mulligan Larsen match against Kent at Muswell Hill
The second match of the season took place at Muswell Hill against the reigning champions, Kent. Kent were very well prepared, having played a practice round the day before and we unfortunately lost ½ – 5½ against this very strong team. Louise Tulip secured our half-point by making an impressive comeback from being three down to halve her match. Despite the loss, it was a beautiful day, and Kent had high praise for the excellent condition of the course. We’re looking forward to improving from here.
Individual results:
Ines Hellmayr lost against Kim Morris 3/2
Corrine Moy lost against Angela Jones 8/6
Christine Tyler lost against Sue Trasler 5/3
Alice Arnold lost against Pat Morecroft 6/5
Elaine Cole lost against Jen Rutherford 3/2
Louise Tulip halved with Fiona Cameron
Friday 28th June Mulligan Larsen match against Essex at Hendon
Third match. Overall result 4½ – 1½ for Essex
Our 3rd match of the season against Essex was held at Hendon on a glorious summer’s day. We had high hopes of win, given that we had narrowly lost at Chigwell GC last year and had home advantage. But despite some strong Middlesex performances and close matches, we were defeated 1½ to 4½ . 4 matches went to the 18th.
Individual results
Corrine Moy lost against Julie Finegan 6/5
Ines Hellmayr lost against Sara Dunn 1 down
Christine Tyler won against Sophie Walters 1 up
Alice Arnold halved against Tiff Wade
Lorely Paine lost against Sue Boom 3/2
Mandy Miller lost against Kate Gadsby 1 down
Friday 19th July Mulligan Larsen match against Sussex at Royal Ashdown Forest
Our fourth match of 2024 took us to the splendid Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club. We arrived the Saturday before our game for a practice round and had a delightful day. The hospitality was outstanding. I discovered that Lulu’s grandfather, Rowand Harker, served as the club captain in 1924. Lulu’s mother, Pauline Harker, was introduced to golf at a young age at this golf club and later wrote a book titled “The Long and the Short of It” about her lessons with Archie Compston. Below is a picture of Pauline at age 15, and it’s clear where Lulu inherited her impressive swing.
We also had a fantastic match day against a formidable Sussex team and managed to secure two points. The company, golf, weather, and food were all exceptional. Days like this are exactly why we love the Mulligan Larsen League so much.
Individual results
Lulu Housman lost against Karen Sykes 5/4
Corrine Moy lost against Aileen Greenfield 7/6
Ines Hellmayr won against Paula Carver 1 up
Elaine Cole lost against Katherin Russell 4/2
Alice Arnold lost against Tracy Poulson 5/3
Liz Kynoch won against Sara Whittaker 3/2
Friday 9th August Mulligan Larsen match against Surrey at Puttenham Golf Course
The last of our 5 league matches brought us to the beautiful Puttenham golf course in Surrey. The overall result of the day was 3 ½ to 2 ½ for Surrey so quite a close call. This was the first match of Vanessa Moulton and she managed to secure a point for the team. What a great result for her and the team!
Lulu Housman won against Kate Powell 6/5
Corrine Moy lost against Maggie Lowe 7/6
Ines Hellmayr halved with Karen Francis
Christine Tyler lost against Maria Diegan 7/6
Alice Arnold lost against Jackie Kingswell 3/1
Vanessa Moulton won against Joanne Thesiger 1 up
Monday 16th September 10 Intercounty Senior Championship at Mill Ride
Mill Ride’s greens were too challenging for some of us on the day and we didn’t win the championship this year (to put it nicely). But we DID win the best turned out 😉
The team was Alice Arnold, Ines Hellmayr, Christine Tyler and Elaine Cole (from left to right).
Tuesday 1st October end of season Jamboree at Highgate
Report to follow
On 07/10/2024 we hosted the Ladies Senior friendly match v Buckinghamshire at Stanmore.
We were lucky that there was only one fairly short rain shower which resulted in a beautiful rainbow. Unfortunately, we lost 1-3, although the matches were well fought, with 2 matches finishing on the 18th hole and one on the 17th hole. Our winning team won by a decisive 4 and 3.
The team members were:
Angela Spelman, Magdalena Donovan, Lilly Lian, Clare Brown, Clare Kent, Vivian Gray, Jane Lees and Carolyn Matthews.
