Match Report: Middlesex Women’s Senior Team vs Kent
27th April | Wyke Green Golf Club
The Middlesex Women’s Senior Team opened the season with their first match against Kent at Wyke Green on 27th April.
The team—Lorely Pain, Tsuruko Kawabata, Ines Hellmayr, Elaine Cole, Corrine Moy, and Christine Tyler—arrived well prepared, thanks to a superb hole-by-hole guide kindly shared in advance by Lorely and the Wyke Green contingent. We all know the course very well but this guide proved invaluable in helping the “non Wyke Greeners” approach the course with confidence in the current conditions.
The match itself, as always against Kent, was played in a wonderful spirit. They are a genuinely lovely bunch, and the day was marked by friendliness and great sportsmanship throughout. Kent’s non-playing captain, Angela, walked the course between matches and later admitted she had been quite concerned, with many of the games being extremely close. At several points, Middlesex were ahead in multiple matches.
However, the strong Kent team managed to turn a few matches around on the closing holes. The final result was a 4–2 win to Kent, though Middlesex can take great encouragement from such a competitive performance.
Match Results:
- Lorely Pain vs Kim Morris – 1 down
- Tsuruko Kawabata vs Tita McCart – 3&2 down
- Ines Hellmayr vs Jen Rutherford – 4&3 up
- Elaine Cole vs Debbie Cox – 7&6 down
- Corrine Moy vs Caroline Collins – 2&1 up
- Christine Tyler vs Pat Morecroft – 3&1 down
Special thanks go to Wyke Green for their excellent hospitality. The captain was on hand to send the matches off, and the manager was there to support at the halfway house, adding to the welcoming and well-organised feel of the day.
All in all, there is a strong feeling that making Wyke Green the home venue for future matches is a very positive strategy. With such support and familiarity with the course, the team can look forward to building on this promising start to the season.
