Our Middlesex Women’s County Championships were held at the wonderful Wyke Green Golf Club on Saturday & Sunday 13th & 14th June.
On Friday we held a 36 hole qualifier for the right to battle for the Championship and the Silver Plate in the matchplay knock-out stages of the competition. 18 women battled tricky conditions and slick but true greens. Our 36 hole leader was home player, Lulu Housman, followed by last year’s Champion, Gemma Allman from Stanmore GC. The semi-final line up was completed by Enfield’s Lucy Labdon and Ines Hellmayr from Muswell Hill. There were also 4 players through to the semi-finals of the Silver Plate competition. Enfield’s Izzy Codling and Issie Brunskill and Finchley’s Katie Olewnik and Coraline Martin. Finchley are also our very first Women’s Champion Club winners, in the inaugural running of this competition. They will go on to represent Middlesex in the National Finals at Woodhall Spa later this year.
DAY 2 saw Lulu take on Ines in the first semi final. Lulu raced to an early lead. Although Ines battled and pulled back some holes in typical gritty fashion, Lulu wore down Ines to close out a 4&2 victory. In the other semi-final Gemma took on Lucy. The match was very even for a long time but reigning champion Gemma closed out the match 5&3. The Silver plate pitted Izzy against Katie and Issie against Coraline. Again, there wasn’t much between all players in the early stages but both Izzy and Issie ran out winners.
THE FINALS saw Lulu versus Gemma in a Wyke Green vs Stanmore clash and Izzy vs Issie in an all Enfield battle. Lulu went up early in the final and never lost the lead, racing away to a 4&2 victory. It was a similar story in the Silver Plate Final with Izzy leading early to eventually triumph by 3&2. The games were played in great spirit and these players know each other’s games so well. Â
We had a fabulous championship that will live long into the memory, hosted by Wyke Green GC. Michael Deller-Merricks and his team did us proud. The hospitality was first class, Pauline & her team made sure that the food was the best in town but the star of the show was the course. Huge thanks & praise must go to Graeme Vincent for his pin positions and to Course Manager, Jimmy Butler for providing us with fabulous playing surfaces and fast, tricky greens. Special thanks also to Club Captain, Jonny Bramley for being there every day to greet the players and help out wherever he was needed. Lastly, thanks to Middlesex volunteers, the Referees led by Robbie and Ketan, our starters, David Nicol and Ruth Holmes, and our President, Di Rowlands. All of these volunteers give their time freely to support this great game in Middlesex! We couldn’t have done this without you.
See you all Mill Hill GC on 4th to 6th June, 2027.
