North Hants Golf Club Women’s County England South Region
It was certainly lovely to see Elizabeth Thomas there and thank you for caddying for Gemma Alman on the last day. Also lovely to see Di Rowland Jenny Winn, Angela Templeman and our President, Tom Powell, supporting and starting the teams and our photographer Des and the County Secretary Lee Patterson. One other supporter was Pat Hone who was wearing pink to the delight of Surrey who said she was incognito which made everyone laugh. Please forgive me if I have missed someone as it was a bit busy.

The winning county shall be the county with the highest number of “Match Points‟. In the event of a tie on “Match Points‟, the result will be determined by the total “Game Points‟ won. If still tied, the result will be determined by the result of the match between the tied counties. If still tied, the results of individual matches between the two counties will be used in the following order until one county is ahead: 1st singles match; 2nd singles match; 3rd singles match; 1st foursomes match; 2nd foursomes match. Should there still not be a clear winner the result shall be decided by lot.

MATCH UPDATES
Middx vs Sussex
Middlesex 2nd team started off their season with a super 6:3 win over Sussex at Sudbury. Apart from Lulu Housman, each Sussex player had a lower handicaps that their Middlesex opponent, making this win even more significant.
The morning sessions were all won by Middlesex; Lulu and Elaine led us out and returned a 4&3 victory. Mandy and Liz were 2up winners and Anne and Marie 1up winners. Each pair dovetailed nicely and everyone had a great platform for the singles.
After a very nice lunch during which there had been a bit of rain, the singles battles commenced.
Lulu and Marie won their matches, Elaine and Anne halved. Mandy battled but succumbed 4&3 to her opponent and Captain Liz’s match was conceded due to illness.
With a date already pencilled in for next years fixture in Sussex, the squad are very much looking forward to more success against the other counties.
Middx vs Surrey
Middlesex 2nd Teams Stovold match v Surrey on Monday 29th of July was played in sweltering heat at Finchley. The morning foursomes saw Nicola Foster and Anne Koychev gain a point with a 1U win against opponents with a combined handicap of 3.9! Sadly that was our only point of the day with all other matches a win for Surrey.
Each match was however keenly fought and no one gave their opponents an easy time.
Liz Kynoch
Hampshire 7 Middlesex 2
Our match against Hampshire was played at Army Golf Club in Farnborough. The weather was favourable, warm and sunny but not too hot. Ines and Liz played a practice round late on Sunday afternoon which proved helpful for all the Middlesex team; Nicola Foster, Mandy Miller, Ines Hellmayr, Elaine Cole, Lorely Paine and Liz Kynoch.
The morning session saw Nicola and Mandy gain a point with a 3 and 2 win against Lily Walker and Georgia Richardson off 1.3 and 2.1 – a super result. Ines and Elaine were 1 down to Georgina Carter and Abby Dymott off 3.2 and 7.9. Lorely Paine and Liz Kynoch lost 3 and 5 to Becky Scott and Tia Brammer off 3.5 and 5.1.
The afternoon singles saw Middlesex gain a single point from Mandys win against Georgina Carter. Another great result against a player with a much lower handicap.
It was a pleasure to play against some very good golfers, even if it’s a bit traumatising to know their 13 year old 2 handicapper could easily be the Middlesex Captains granddaughter!
Hampshire were welcoming hosts with Eilean Cunningham the Hampshire Captain ensuring the day went smoothly.
We will soon agree a date for next years fixture in Middlesex.
Kent 5½ Middlesex 3½
After playing Hampshire on Monday 5th of August Middlesex drive from Farnborough down to Canterbury to face Kent. One change to the team from the Hampshire match with Anne Koychev replacing Lorely Paine.
Unlike Army, Canterbury was familiar to most of the Middlesex team.
The morning singles saw each match keenly contended but each pair loosing out Nicola Foster and Mandy Miller lost 2 and 3 to Ali Ord and Skye Fontanelli (1.9 and 2.7) Elaine Cole and Ines Hellymar also lost 2 and 3 to Ellen Wilson and Tyra Skinner (4.6 and 8.8) and the final pairing of Anne Koychev and Liz Kynoch lost 1 and 2 to Anne Marie Forrester and Caroline Collins (7.8 and 6.8)
A slightly warmer day that the one played in Hampshire the day before. Saw the temperature increase for the afternoon singles. Nicola one the first match 1 up, Mandy halved her match and both Elaine and Anne won their matches.
Next years home match date will be announced shortly, hopefully with more a more substantial gap than the 11 hours ‘rest’ from the match before!

Winter Training
After the playing season has ended, players have the opportunity to be selected for Women’s Winter Training. Potential Women’s 1st Team players will combine with potential Women’s 2nd team players and they will all benefit from ‘away days’ together during the winter and other experiences that the County will provide. As well as providing a fun social atmosphere, this gives the Team Managers the opportunity to monitor all potential players and see who is performing well and improving before a decision is made about which players should go into the 1st and 2nd Team Squad in spring. The criteria for selection for Winter Training are:
- The player must have their Home Club in Middlesex
- The player’s WAGR Ranking
- The player’s performances in National events (English Women’s Amateur Championship, etc.)
- The player’s performances in County events (Women’s County Championship, etc)
- Typically, a Handicap Index of 9.4 or better
A more detailed Selection Criteria Document can be viewed HERE.
The overall aim of Winter Training is to improve upon the already considerable abilities of the high-performance players and assist them towards excelling in national amateur golf while representing Middlesex. Players who are selected will be invited to join the squad in late 2020. They will be provided with a schedule of events for the next 12 months, a Welcome Pack and some information about what will be expected of them.
Summer Squad & Inter-County Golf
A squad of 10-12 players that will make up the Women’s 1st Team will be selected after Winter Training has finished and before the playing season begins. Generally, the criteria for selection are:
Players’ commitment to and performance in tournaments, in particular, the Women’s County Championship
Players’ commitment to and performance in Winter Training
Players’ commitment to and performance in County matches
Additionally, at the manager’s discretion, a player may be considered for selection to the squad if they possess the following abilities:
- A single-figure handicap golfer who is performing and playing to their handicap or near to it.
- A player who has a Handicap Index of 9, 10, and even 11 handicap but who are improving and on the way down in their handicap.
- Juniors who are improving and have potential.
Teams that play matches and County Week will be selected on the basis of Manager’s knowledge of who the strongest players available are for the event.
Usually, two friendly practice matches are arranged earlier in the season to prepare for County Week.
THE MULLIGAN LARSEN TROPHY .
The Senior Women’s Inter-County Scratch League for the South Region plays for the Mulligan Larsen trophy which is presented at the end of season jamboree event in October.
Matches take place from May to September and every county plays each other county, the fixture alternating between home and away every year. Currently the competing counties are Essex, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex, with Hampshire joining us in 2024.
Responsibility for collecting the results and running the end of season jamboree and trophy presentation rotates around the counties and it is Middlesex’s turn in 2024.
